HOMELESS SHELTERS
Our ministers regularly visit the largest homeless shelter in Cambridge, where they provide pastoral care to our congregants and other people who are staying at the shelter. HOSPITALS, PRISONS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS Because many of our congregants are confined from time to time to prisons, jails, hospitals, mental institutions and other institutions, we make a special effort to schedule regular pastoral visits to all of our members who cannot be with us outdoors on Sunday morning. We give out bright red wristbands with our name and number embossed on them, so that our congregants, and the social workers, chaplains and nurses who care for them, can reach us in the event of an emergency. SOCIAL SERVICES While the Outdoor Church is not itself a social service agency, the Church connects people on the street with these services, providing information about meals, shelters, detox centers and programs, shelters for abused women and children, legal support and medical assistance. The staff of the Outdoor Church regularly appear in court on behalf of congregants, serve as references, and, on occasion, accompany congregants to interviews, hearings and other appointments. |
